Dear Nurse Ansalong:
I have just been offered a part as Columbia in the local cast and I
really really really want to do it, but my parents don't want to let me
cuz I'm 13. How can I talk them into it without being incredibly sneaky
and vicious?? They saw through that one last time and I was grounded.
-Columbia
Columbia, you'll never get anywhere lying to your parents except where
you wound up, which is grounded. Parents are naturally protective of
their children and, when they think about the Rocky Horror stereotype,
they can sometimes be overprotective. Try inviting the people in charge
of your cast over to your house and let them sit down and talk. Once
they realize that a castmember is someone like them, they might be a
little more relaxed about it. Also, try having a Columbia rehearsal at
your house. Seeing the work that you and the other performers put into
the show can show how devoted you are to performing. One last idea is to
set up a "deal" with your parents. It could be something like, "If you
let me perform Rocky once a month, I'll do the dishes and clean the
house". This will add a little more work for you, but if your parents
think they're getting something out of the deal, they might be a little
more interested in agreeing.
