Dear Nurse Ansalong:
I love Rocky and I hate it when my homophobic little brother goes on about what a freak I am because I like going to it. He's always down on my friends (most of whom also like Rocky) and especially can't stand the fact that one of my best friends is bisexual. Is there anyway I can open his mind up or at least shut his mouth?
-Tara

Tara, there are somethings in life that people just don't get. I have a friend who thinks that Pauly Shore is one of the funniest performers while i tend to run away screaming from any movie or television show that he is in. This world is full of differing opinions. The one thing that you can't do is let those opinions dictate what you listen to or watch. If your brother hasn't watched Rocky yet, try and get him to watch it with you. From the way your brother sounds, trying to get through to him might be difficult. A sneaky way to get him to stop bothering you is to not let him know how mad you are. If he gets you or your friends mad, he'll keep using that method because he knows that it'll work. If you don't give him what he apparently wants, which is your attention and reactions, then he might lose interest in bothering you. Lastly, please remember that little brothers are known for trying to irritate their older relatives. Depending on his age, he might be at a stage where it's easier to attack something different then to try to understand it. If all of this fails you, then you can always use the last resort... talk to your parents about his actions and what he's saying to you. It might feel like your "telling on him", but, if he's allowed to go on acting this way, there is no way of knowing how bad he'd get. I hope that you'll get him to be quiet soon so that you can go on enjoying your life.
