Dear Nurse Ansalong:
I'm 14 and have been dating this guy for a really long time.Recently we have started having sex. Well the thing is, I told my mom about this, because let's face it-if I'm old enough to be doing this, I'm old enough to tell her about it. Anyway, my question to you is: how do I go about asking mom if she'll take me to get on the Pill? I have asked her before, but she won't give me a straight answer! She says it makes her feel like taking me to get on the Pill is giving me permission to have sex! I'm going to have sex with or without her permission--I just don't want to have a child in the meantime! Can you help?

Magenta, you should tell your Mom exactly what you told me. Tell her that you are having sex, but that you want to make sure that you are safe from anything that could go wrong. Make sure that she understands that you want her advice and help in your life. If you didn't, then you wouldn't have told her the truth. Be perpared if your Mom still won't agree with you or has a problem with helping you. She might still strongly disagree with you or she might see or even, in some circumstances, see it as a failing on her part in how she raised you. If this happens, then make sure that the man that you are with has a large supply of condoms. You can also buy a back-up method, like Nonoxynol-9, to stay safe from diseases. A personal message from me... Please be careful. There are many sexually transmitted diseases that can and will effect you for your entire life. Condoms break, and that is a feeling that I never want to see anyone else have to go through. So, whatever happens, please protect yourself and remember that amazing sex does not equal true love.
