Dear Nurse Ansalong:

I recently showed my Rocky pictures to my best friend and she looked at them nonchalantly, however she told another friend they made her feel uncomfortable. Why do you think this is and do you think I should approach her about it? It sound as if were kids, but we're 25!!
-Raven

Raven, everyone has a comfort level. This is the level that something causes us feelings of discomfort about a given topic. It could be anything from photos from an RHPS performance to a person's religion to whatever else you can think of. Though there seems to be an average level that everyone can handle, there are some people that find themselves either above or below that level.

For example, you can use someone like Marilyn Manson to illustrate this point. For many people, MM is someone that they do not feel comfortable watching and will change the channel or dial when he comes on. You might think that there is nothing wrong with Mr. Manson, but that is your own comfort level. We all work at different levels and sometimes there are things that registar as a discomfort.

It sounds like to me that, while you have no problem with the photos, your friend is somewhere below the level of comfort. Since you don't say just how uncomfortable your friend was, I'll have to guess at it, but it sounds like she just didn't feel the same feelings as you did when you showed her the photos.

If this reaction is as surprising as it sounds from what you've written, you might want to ask her about it. Try and keep the discussion as a normal conversation and try not to make it seem like an inquisition about her. By keeping it simple and just talking, you might be able to find out your friend's levels of comfort and be able to gauge how she will react in the future. By doing that, you might find better ways to show her things, like RH photos, that won't cause her such discomfort in the future.
