Dear Nurse Ansalong:
I have a problem being myself when I am around friends. I like to wear strange make-up and dress differently, but I am afraid to do these things in front of my friends. I am scared they won't want to be my friends anymore, even though I know that they aren't like that. Do you have any advice for me?
-Frannie
Frannie, if it's as you say and they wouldn't have a problem with it, then you should go ahead and dress the way that you like. You shouldn't let what your group of friends think force you to live your life differently than you want to. If you're nervous about how they'd react to an overnight radical image make-over, then you could always try to do it one piece at a time. Start with your clothing and gradually bring in the new look. Then, once you've finished that change, start with something else, like your make-up. This way, they'll see that it's not a bad thing to look different and what is showing on the outside has not changed what you are on the inside.
