Dear Nurse Ansalong:
In the original RHPS, when "Once in Awhile" was still part of it, Janet cries when Brad sings. It seems to me that everything between them is fixed, and that they are done with their cheating ways, yet Janet does Rocky right afterwards. Is this explained because the song was cut from the movie, or is there another reason? This makes Janet seem cruel rather than just driven by passion.

Sable, the problem that you have can be explained by the process of adapting a play into a film. As the script is worked through again and again, changes can occur. The explanation and/or reason for "Once In A While" is easily explained in the play, but makes no sense in the context of the film. In the play, Brad sees that Janet has slept with Rocky, exclaims, "That's it! It's over!" and then goes into the song. In the course of the song, he comes to a sort of peace with what's happened and welcomes that, "The one you've found is back again." Since, in the film, Brad discovers Janet and Rocky in the tank with everyone else, the song suddenly doesn't seem to have any meaning anymore. If the song was used in the film, it would be like he has some kind of X-ray vision and could see all over the house and know what everyone was doing. While it's a nice song and Barry Bostwick did a very nice job singing it, I don't think that it'll ever be reinserted into the film since of all of the storyline questions that it would bring up. A big thanks and a hug for Rest Home Ricky for helping me with this one... ; )
