Dear Nurse Ansalong:
I have a problem. I'm gay, and if I don't come out soon, I'm going to do something drastic. My mom says she doesn't care if I'm gay, and I'm sure my dad won't care either. But I'm really afraid to come out..so I need advice, basically.

Io, while it's great to be free with who you are, you need to be sure that you're prepared when you do "come out" for the consequenses. It's great to hear that your parents would be so accepting of your decision. Having them behind you will definately help you to get through some of the problems. If your nervous about coming out to the "rest of the world", then you could always try to do it in smaller steps. Start with your family and, once you feel comfortable enough, tell your good friends. This way, you build up your confidence in yourself and, as you tell each group, the supportive people will grow right along with your confidence. Also, please remember that you don't have to come out until you want to and are personally ready for it. Once the strength and drive is there, I think that you'll find it not quite as scary to show your true self to the world.
