Dear Nurse Ansalong:
In SHOCK TREATMENT, why does Bert pretend to be blind? Why does he sleep sitting up? And why doesn't he let Cosmo and Nation in on Farley's plan?
-Io
Io, while I don't have an answer for the reason that he sleeps sitting up, your other two Bert questions are ones that I can answer. Like Dr. Scott in RHPS, Bert apparently has a past that he wants to keep as far away from himself as possible. His reference to Ralph at the end of the film about having everyone shot at the Danube is a possible reference to a Nazi past for Bert. It would not look good for everyone's favorite television host to have lived that kind of life. The reason that Bert doesn't include Cosmo and Nation in on Farely's plan is because they're part of it. It's Cosmo and Nation's job to turn Janet away from Brad and towards Farely. If they would have known what was going on, they could have made a mistake and screwed up the entire plan. The best way to keep a secret is to tell only the people that definately need to know the actual truth and, to Bert and everyone involved, Cosmo and Nation did not need to know.
