Dear Nurse Ansalong:
What is Riff-Raff singing about when we first see him looking out of the window? He speaks of darkness, and drugs (morphia) and how he wants the sun and light to enter his life. Why is he so melencholy and pensive here but nowhere else in the film? Also, why exactly were the Transylvanians on Earth? Eddie warns his Uncle that "They musn't carry out their evil deed", and Riff tells Frank his mission "is a failure". What mission, what evil deed, is that? Also, Riff tells Frank he is his "new commander", but he and Magenta, instead of taking over whatever mission Frank had been sent for, return to Transsexual instead, because, as Riff says, they're "noble mission is almost complete"? What was THEIR mission, and why does it appear to be different from Frank's?? Was it to kill Frank, for whatever reason? It certainly seems so...If so, why did they wait so long? And who sent them?

Mags, I'll try and answer your questions to the best of my abilities. Riff's lyrics appear to be a reflection of what Brad and Janet are singing about. But while Janet's and, in the play, Brad's lyrics are hopeful, Riff's appear to be more of a sorrowful nature. The key part of Riff's solo is the references to drugs. While the others sing about the hope that they feel seeing the lone light, the dark and foreboding truth about what's waiting for them within that light comes out in Riff's solo. For myself, the reason the Transylvanians are on Earth is to take over the planet. By using his time and energies to create Rocky instead of his "real mission", it gave Riff the opening to take over. I've never seen an explanation of why Riff mentions "our mission" after killing Frank. It could be that they'll return to their home and just tell them that the original mission was a failure. It is also very true that their could have been a plot to kill Frank for the entire trip and that. as mentioned before, Frank's "erratic behavior" gives Riff his reason for doing what he does. As a final thought, since Brad, Janet, and Dr. Scott escaped, the seeds for the eventual take-over by the planet of Transexual could have been planted within one of them. From the lyrics of "Super Heroes", that idea seems a definate possibility...
