Dear Nurse Ansalong:
I have a serious problem. For the past 7 years, my sister has sexually and phisicaly abused me, enough to make me bleed. But now she's going to move to college, and I was wondering what should I do? Should I tell someone about this? I never could before because if she found out that I told someone she'd hit me, hard. I'm really confused.

Unhappy, I wish that there would be a simple answer for your problem, but there isn't. If she's been abusing you bad enough to make you bleed, then you should definately try to find a way to get help. If it's possible, try to get professional help. It could be difficult for you to do this on your own if you're a minor, but you should get this out into the open. If your school has an on-site counseling service, try talking with them. That way, you can find a way to talk about it and also become more prepared to tell your parents. If you don't feel like you can trust a counselor, then try and talk to a good friend that will keep this information private and will help you to talk through this. Talking to these people could help you become stronger and more prepared to tell the other people in your life. Whatever happens, you need to get this person to stop abusing you. If you did nothing to deserve this, then you also should not have to put up with it.
