Dear Nurse Ansalong:
The people at my school make fun of me because I have emotional problems but they don't realise that they're making it worse. How should I deal with it?

Chookie, when people don't understand something, they tend to either make fun of it or to shun the problem. Sadly, they've chosen the first option. If they appear willing to actually listen to you, then you could explain your "problem" with them. There's no guarentee that they'll want to listen to you, but it wouldn't hurt to try. If this isn't a possibility, then you might need to find a way to ignore what they're saying. The comments might be cruel, but if you don't allow them to cause you pain, then they won't. And, seeing that you aren't hurting from what they're saying, the comments might start to stop. Building up this inner strength could be difficult and take a little time, but the power that you feel from it could help you with the other difficulties that you're having in your life.
