Dear Nurse Ansalong:
My friend wants to home-school this year. Normally I would have no problem with that, but she wants to teach herself! She will be taking Algebra I this year and I know that she couldn't teach it to herself because I have already taken it. She keeps ignoring my warnings and now will not talk to me. What do I do?
-Mishegoss

Mishegoss, there are people in this world that, once they get an idea in their heads, won't give it up no matter what. It sounds like your friend has made up her mind and is not interested in hearing any different viewpoints. If you've tried to get through to her with your concern and she won't listen, then you might just have to sit back and see what happens. If she succeeds, then all that will happen is that she proved you wrong. If she does poorly, then she will need you there to help her out of whatever problem that she's in. If you do try and talk with her again, make sure that she knows that you still want to be friends with her and that you still do care about what happens to her, even if you disagree on this point. Make sure that she understands that you'll always be there for her and that, from your experience, Algebra I is more trouble than she thinks it is. Even if the two of you disagree on this, the friendship should remain and pull you through these tough times.
