Dear Nurse Ansalong:
I have a bit of a problem. I love ROCKY HORROR. No, that's not the main part of my problem(or is it???, I don't know). Anyways, I live in a small town. I go to a small town school. Here's my problem; I like to talk about RHPS(alot) and I try to find other people in my school who share this similar interest. But, whenever I even ask one of my friends or aquaintences about it, they look at me like I'm some kind of FREAK. There aren't many people I know in my school who have even seen the movie. I don't like to always talk over the net to people about Rocky because it feels so impersonal since I can't see them. I feel like I'm somewhat of an outcast. I don't blame RHPS, but I just feel confused. What should I do? How do I try to find people with similar interests in what I like? Sometimes if people know what Rocky is about and don't like it, then they get mad at me for talking about it and tell that I'm stupid or gay for liking something like that. I know that liking Rocky is not gay, and I know that these people can't keep me from talking about what I like, but sometimes it really hurts me when they say something like that. What should I do? Please help me. I'm going CRAZY.
-Desperate

Desperate, when many people don't understand something, they tend to have bad reactions to it. I've had several friends who reacted the same way when I told them that I performed in an RHPS cast. They'd give me strange looks and say something like "You do that?!" It's difficult, but there are ways to find people with a like mind as you. One of the best ways is to use the internet. I know that you said that you don't like it, but the speed at which it moves can help. Try to leave a note on different RHPS sites about what your looking for. Be sure to include your location to get a response from someone near you. If you try chat rooms, then aim for ones on sites that are near you. In the "real world", check out places near you where RHPS fans could hang out. Try going to a local record store or coffee house and talk with the people there. You could also try to convert your sceptical friends. Invite them over to your house to watch the film. If they actually get to see it, then they might not dislike it as much. A final way that could take a little longer is to write into an RHPS fanzine with your address and request. Depending on the circulation, someone near you could read your message and send you one of their own. Please don't give up hope. There are people out there just waiting to meet you.
