Dear Nurse Ansalong:
Should I kill myself?
-Confused

Confused, we all go through bad periods in our lives. Everything looks totally helpless and there's no reason to go on. But, please believe me when I say that, by killing yourself, it'll only make matters worse. I speak from experience in this because one of my friends committed suicide about five years ago. He had everything to live for. He was a great guy, a talented musician, with the personality to win you over in a second. But, he also felt like nobody really cared about him and that he was alone in the world. Looking back now, he showed all the symptoms of being manic depressive, but I was at the age when I had no idea that this was an actual medical condition. He wouldn't listen to anyone's promises of help and he hung himself from his bedroom light. In his note, he said that he thought that everyone would be happier if he was gone, but, in reality, all of his family and friends, including myself, were totally shattered emotionally for months after it happened. I'm not sure if his Mother has ever fully recovered from what happened. The people that are left behind are forced to have feelings that they failed the person somehow. This adds into the normal feelings of the loss of a loved one to make it even worse. If you have feelings like this regularly, then I'd advice you to go and get some professional help. There are experts who could help you to move past these feelings. If you don't feel comfortable going to a doctor, then try and talk to a friend that you trust about what you're feeling. Take it from someone who went through it. Suicide should never be an option...
