Dear Nurse Ansalong:
Do you think that getting someone to "do the dirty work" (ask someone out) for you is a good or a bad thing?
-Dickie
Dickie, I wouldn't call it a totally bad thing, but it would be better for you to ask the person yourself. Even if it's difficult for you to speak to the person, for you to ask him/her yourself will help to show how interested you are in the person. Also, by asking, you are starting to talk to this person, which will help with your confidence in the future. And don't think you have to ask the person with just a question. One of the nicest date requests that I ever got was a small bouquet of wild flowers and a simple card with the question written in it. Try and be creative and you might just get that date...
