Dear Nurse Ansalong:
I was the one who wrote in about being nervous over seeing ROCKY in the theatre for the first time. It was great, but now how do I convince my parents I want to go again and more often? (P.S.-I ended up going as Brad, my guy-friend went as Janet, and everyone thought the guy playing Rocky [live] was really fine. Clinton Street is the best!)
-Was Afraid

W.A., you are like so many people out there. They hear all the stories about what supposedly happens at an RHPS theatre showing, and they get scared. When they actually go and see the live show though, all of their fears disappear and they realize how much fun it is. There are a couple ways that you could go about getting your Mom to let you go more. If you are interested in acting, then you could tell her that seeing the show will help you learn more about performing. If that doesn't help, then try and make a deal with her. If you're a good student, try and talk her into, if you get a certain GPA, letting you go to a couple shows. You could also offer to help out around the house. This way, both of you are getting something out of the agreement. If your Mom is nervous about who you'd be going with, try and find someone older, like a brother or another parent, to go with you. The fact that you would be at the show with someone that your Mom knows and trusts might help her to relax and let you go to the show. One last thing to remember is, with whatever you do, give it time. Don't think that, just because she said no once, that you'll never get to go. The more you try and the more interest you show, the better the chance that you'll be back at your local theatre.
