Dear Nurse Ansalong:
I'm 13 years old tomorrow and a huge fan of ROCKY HORROR. I like this boy and he's my sometimes friend. I want to ask him out. Nothing is stopping me but my own nerves! How can I get over this and just ask him?

Phoebe, I hope that you had a nice birthday. In regards to your problem, there are ways to work around your nerves. Don't think that you have to walk up to him and say, "Hello, would you go out with me?" If it's possible, try to talk to him and get to know him better. The more comfortable you are with a person, the easier it will be. If you're still having problems, ask a friend to join in the conversation. If it looks like you're having a problem, he/she can be there to help you out. If it's the idea of asking him out that's making you nervous, then try and ask him in a different way. If he mentions in your conversation that he likes coffee, then tell him that you know of a really good place for him to go and offer to take him there. This way, you've asked him out, but, by asking the question in a different way, you've made it easier to ask him. The only way that it's going to get less nerve racking for you to ask someone out is to do it. The more practice that you have, the better you'll be at it.
