Dear Nurse Ansalong:
What in the hell does "Looking for Trade" (both the song and the title) mean?
-Kylie

Kylie, many of the songs from Shock Treatment can be confusing. The original script was called THE BRAD AND JANET SHOW and was spread out across the town of Denton. Because of a Screen Actor's Guild strike, the film's budget was cut and the entire film's location became the television studio. In the original script, Janet sings this song just after she's escaped from Farely and his helpers. From the way that it's portrayed, this song appears to be about Janet realizing that she's "sold out". As the song begins, Janet is walking down the street in a way that resembles a prostitute and singing about how her life is at a dead end. She winds up in a bar, probably trying to drown her feelings about what she's done. The thread of the song seems to point to Janet searching for something that she wants or needs and that her success isn't all she thought it would be. Another interesting piece from the original song is that Brad sings the "Looking for love" lines. Please remember that many of the songs probably went through many rewrites and that the song might not make total sense with the rest of the film.
